I hate house chores... particularly folding laundry and ironing. That's why most of my summer clothes are linen and seersucker-- no need to iron! Unfortunately, I can't quite get away with that on the wedding day so I decided to invest in a compromise... a steamer!
I initially registered for one, but realized I would need it before the wedding, so I bit the bullet and bought one. Of course, I did my requisite research before deciding on the Conair G54 Compact Fabric Steamer. I've never owned a steamer before so I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I got mine on sale at Macys.com for $29.99 and am happy to say that I'm very pleased with the results!
I read some poor reviews about it, but also noted that in the numerous positive reviews, people were urged to read the instructions thoroughly before using it. A lot of the issues people encountered (gurgling, water spewing, and leakage) are things that can be prevented if you use the steamer properly (i.e. it will leak if the nozzle is not hung back in the correct position or the steam tube is twisted). My best advice, read the instruction pamphlet before using! The manual also provides some very good tips on how to steam your clothes quickly and effectively (start at the top and work your way down... make light curling motions... etc.)
For someone who hates ironing, this is a god send. In addition to linen and seersucker, I own quite a bit of silk and chiffon pieces (which coincidentally most of my wedding wardrobe consists of as well!) and the steamer just frees all the wrinkles in seconds.
The pros:
- Super portable and light (perfect for transporting on the wedding day)
- I can use it for sheets and drapes as well
- Includes a hanging hook that can conveniently attach to any door where you can hang your garments
- Even Mr. Canary knows how to use it
- And the ultimate: no more ironing!
The cons:
- If you're steaming a few items, it will require frequent refilling
- Takes a while to warm up (for the first steam, refill steaming is quite fast)
All in all, this is a sound investment for the wedding day and I can definitely get some good use out of it after. Anyone else used or purchase a steamer for your wedding attire? Which one did you end up getting?
